Language barriers in the medical, social services and mental health fields can have catastrophic consequences. Among patients with psychiatric conditions, those who encounter language barriers are more likely than others to receive a diagnosis of severe pathology. The Mental Health Association of Middle TN is the first agency in the community to undertake the task of assessing the mental health needs of the community for immigrants and refugees. The TN Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities has provided funding for our agency to develop trainings for interpreters in the community in mental health issues, as well as for mental health providers in how to best utilize interpreters.
Mental Health Training for Interpreters: This two-day training for interpreters interested in working in mental health settings will provide instruction on the following:
- Ethics in working in mental health settings
- Mental health diagnoses, such as depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, personality disorders, co-occurring disorders and children’s mental health issues.
- Medications, treatments and treatment settings for mental health diagnoses.
- Interpreter’s role in mental health settings.
- Mental health systems in other countries, as compared with the U.S. systems.
- Role play exercises providing participants an opportunity to practice their new skills.
How to Work with an Interpreter: This 90 minute training for mental health providers educates on the basics of working with interpreters. This training covers:
- Situations in which use of an interpreter is necessary
- Basic competencies for mental health interpreters
- Types of interpreting
- What should be addressed in a pre-session with an interpreter
- Do’s and don’ts in working with interpreters
- Scenarios in which mental health interpreters are utilized, thereby modeling for providers the appropriate use of interpreters.
